Cross Country
Wigan Phoenix have taken part in the Mid
lancs cross country league for several years now and are competing
successfully in both the mens and womens divisions.

CROSS COUNTRY MID LANCS, LIVERPOOL Saturday November 24th saw the third of the Mid Lancs Cross Country at Sefton Park, Liverpool. Despite other “less attractive” races in Europe, Wigan Phoenix had several runners in the event. In the ladies event, in which the course was about 4.5 miles Wigan Phoenix had two lady runners. Claire Entwistle finished in 4th place and in an excellent time of 30:47 while Kathryn Culshaw continues her enjoyment for cross country by running a good time of 38:53 to finish in 29th place. In total there were 55 finishers in the ladies race in which Gemma Miles from Kendal won the race in 28:45. In the men’s race, which was around 6 miles, the veteran’s over 40 team finished in 12th place with 204 points. Clayton le Moors won with 21 points and second was Blackpool with 49 points. There were five Wigan Phoenix male runners in this event with Stephen Nicholls being the first runner home in 42nd place and with a time of 38:29. Kevin Edwards finished in 65th place and with a time of 40:16. Chris Wilson finished with a time of 41:15 and in 82nd place while closely followed by was Barry Abram who finished in 84th place and in a time of 41:19. John Flatley finished in 136th place and with a time of 47:13 to complete all runners for Wigan Phoenix. In total there were 171 finishers in the men’s race in which Anthony Ford from Blackpool won the race in 32:06. MID LANCS CROSS COUNTRY, LANCASTER Saturday January 12th saw the fourth race in this seasons Mid Lancs Cross Country League which was held around the grounds of Lancaster University, Lancaster. In muddy and testing conditions, Wigan Phoenix had 15 runners in the event with a few, especially the ladies, making their debuts for cross country. In the ladies event, in which the course was around 8Km in distance, the ladies team finished in 8th place with 76 points. The winning team being Lancaster & Morecambe with 32 points. There were four ladies from Wigan Phoenix that ran the cross country. Well done to Jacqui Jones for running her debut in cross country. Jacqui finished in 23rd place and in an excellent time of 32:33 to also be the first Wigan Phoenix lady runner home in the race. Tracey Dutton also continues her enjoyment for cross country by running a good time of 32:41 to finish in 26th place. Charlotte Finch, making her debut for cross country, finished in 30th place and she also produced a good run of 33:04. Kathryn Culshaw also ran a good time of 34:53 to finish in 41st place. There were 78 finishers in the ladies race with Sarah Tunstall from Kendal winning in a time of 26:08. In the men’s race which was around 11 Km, the men’s team finished 10th with 447 points. The vets over 40’s ‘A’ team finished 7th with 137 points while the over 40’s ‘B’ team finishing 18th with 315 points. Lancaster & Morecambe won the senior team with 76 points and Wesham won the vets teams with 66 points. Wigan Phoenix had 11 men running the cross country in which Andy Eccles in 51st place and with a time of 39:52 was the first Wigan Phoenix runner home. Chris Wilson finished in 56th place and with a time of 40:21 while John Worthington finished with a time of 42:00 to finish in 88th place. Barry Abram recorded a time of 42:02 to finish in 90th place and David Waddington completed the course in a time of 40:20 to finish in 94th place. Kevin Edwards finished in 96th position and with a time of 42:25. David Collins finished the course in 119th place and with a time of 43:38 meanwhile Paul Seddon finished in 135th place and with a time of 45:05. Alex Turnbell in 140th place and in a time of 45:30 was the ninth runner from Wigan Phoenix to finish. Roy Hart completed the course in a time of 48:13 to finish in a race position of 167 and finally John Flatley finished 174th overall and in a time of 49:00 to complete all the runners from Wigan Phoenix. In total there were 213 finishers in the men’s race in which Simon Deakin from Leeds City won the race in 32:45.
