There were two runners from Wigan Phoenix that ran the race. They say that lighting can strike twice well that was certainly the case in this race as Andrew Nightingale beat his brother Christopher by 3 seconds for the second time this year. I’ll repeat that again Andrew Nightingale beat his brother Christopher by 3 seconds. In the climbing section of the race a very tiring Christopher was overtaken by a revitalised Andrew and from that point there was no hold back. Benidorm results here BENIDORM REVIEW The annual Benidorm half marathon and full marathon took place on Sunday November 25th and it was extra special because it was the 25th anniversary of the race. For a large group of Wigan Phoenix members and supporters a few days away from cold, wet and windy Wigan was just the tonic especially in the run up to Christmas. While most of the party are season professionals when it comes to running in Benidorm and especially sampling the nightlife, however for a few, Benidorm was a whole new experience. Firstly, there was a small matter of run the half or full marathon that slightly got in the way of any partying and entertainment. In total there were 19 runners from Wigan Phoenix that ran in which 7 brave people ran the marathon and 12 ran the half marathon. The course itself took in the main streets and areas of Benidorm. The half marathon course started from the Town Hall and made it’s way along the main road called the Mediterraneo. At the end of the Mediterraneo the course then turned back on itself so effectively the runners ran along the other side of the Mediterraneo and this took the runner towards the ‘Old Town’. The runners then ran through the side streets in the ‘Old Town’ before heading down along the sea front towards the bottom end of Benidorm called the Poniente. At the Poniente the runners then turned back on themselves and again this took them along the sea front. The course then took the runner from virtually one end of Benidorm right the way through, and as far as the eye could see, towards the other end of Benidorm. Once there the course then turned left and therefore taking the runners up a slight climb towards the north end of Benidorm. Once there the course then turned back on itself and then headed back down towards the Mediterraneo before finishing at the Town Hall. The marathon course was two laps of the above with an extra loop at the north end of Benidorm, at the start, for good measure. Again the marathon started and finished at the Town Hall. The marathon started at the very early time of 8.30am with the half marathon starting at the later time of 10.00am. Conditions for the race were ideal. It was cloudy for most of the race and it was quite windy in parts. The sun made an appearance now and again but most important it was nice and cool. In fact ignoring the tall hotels and the fact that you were in Benidorm, you could almost be back in Wigan such was the weather. There were plenty of drinks stations around the course plus helpers from Wigan Phoenix and supporters who kept us supplied with energy drinks and lots of encouragement especially in those final few miles and kilo-meters towards the end. All in all the runners were quite pleased with their times and performances especially Andy Ward who finishing fourth overall in the marathon and Jayne Taylor for being first in her age category. Also for Charolette Finch and Andrew Nightingale for completing their first ever marathon’s but also for Brian Kearns who proves there’s no age limit to running and completing half marathon’s. A big thanks to Debbie Townsend for the photo’s, on the website, for taking our runners in their less glamorous state during various stages of the race. The rest of the week was all about chilling out and enjoying a few trips out. A day trip back from Alicante was something you had to be there to see it with the group coming face to face with the locals down a darken path. Andy Ward’s impression of spider man by climbing on Dick and Jimmy’s balcony. Try using the front door next time Andy. The weather seemed to improve from Wednesday onwards and the group enjoyed the sunny weather. The group also enjoyed having the odd couple of drinks or two around the clubs and seeing some of the local acts.

I told them that the Formby 10k was easy trot and it would do us good to change our weekly run (lie) I forgot to mention the sand dunes and the running on dry sand. ( didn't bother to tell them) Well what
a day at the start Rachael decided to prep talk her team
We all
started at the start line and Jo DECIDED TO LIVE THE DREAM Rachael ran fast
Not waiting for us and as Jo started on the front she decided that was were she was staying, running in front of Vicky well for at least 5min, then poor Jo realised that living the dream was short lived and Vicky stormed passed her.
Well Team Captain won first prize and Vicky won second prize and Jo came (does it matter).
